We asked some of out APA Board Members, “Why patient advocacy?” Here is Jariss’ response.

Patient advocacy is a vital aspect of the modern healthcare system that assists patients in receiving the highest quality of care and ensures active involvement in their own treatment plans. Advocates serve as a bridge between patients and healthcare providers, often playing a crucial role in empowering patients and fostering positive healthcare outcomes.

Empowering through advocacy is crucial, as it provides patients with the knowledge and resources to make informed decisions about their healthcare plans and treatment options. Advocates guide and educate patients about their rights, treatment options, and available support services with compassion, enabling them to make decisions on their terms. Knowledge is key, and the more patients know and understand, the more confidently they can make educated decisions about their care.

A key facet of patient advocacy is enhancing the overall patient experience. Advocates serve as compassionate allies, offering emotional support and a listening ear to patients during their healthcare journey. They help patients navigate the complexity of diagnoses, treatment options, and communicate effectively with healthcare providers. By addressing patients' concerns, fears, and anxieties, advocates create a supportive environment where patients feel valued, respected, and actively involved in their care. Such a positive experience leads to greater patient satisfaction, improved quality of life, and increased trust in healthcare providers, ultimately fostering a lifelong partnership centered on the patient's well-being.

Patient advocacy is vital for fostering important relationships and bridging the gap between patients and healthcare providers. It empowers patients, protects their rights, and contributes to enhancing the overall healthcare experience. By incorporating patient advocacy into the core of our healthcare systems, we not only promote better patient outcomes but also cultivate a culture of patient-centered care that places individual needs, preferences, and values at the forefront. It is through patient advocacy that we can create a positive environment that is compassionate, inclusive, and built on the foundation of empathy and respect.
